As of 1:35 PM today, the Race to Richmond has begun. Our intrepid runner, Cobb Technologies service technician and veteran of the 7 x 7 x 7, Steve Scott, took off from the starting line this afternoon, taking the first strides of his 168-mile, five day journey.
This first leg of the race is the most challenging of the entire tour — Steve’s hometown of Danville, Virginia, which lies on the border with North Carolina, enjoys scenic and rolling landscapes created by the foothills of the Appalachians. Starting at an elevation of 531 feet, Steve’s final stop for the night, South Boston, Virginia, rests at 430 feet above sea level.
Throughout this leg of the race, Steve will run 50 Kilometers, or 31 miles, and experience a total elevation change over 2,000 feet — 1,053 feet of incline, and 1,165 feet of decline. With an elevation change as drastic as this, today will most definitely his most physically taxing of the entire run.
LOCAL HOPE-GROWERS
In Danville, our highlighted hope-growing organization is the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association. This organization serves their local community by providing cancer patients and survivors with access to services and supplies needed in their cancer treatment. This includes travel reimbursement, prescription aid, medical supplies, nutritional supplements, wigs, hats, and turbans, and group emotional support.
In South Boston, we want to highlight Halifax Dog Squad. This organization prevents cruelty to dogs by rescuing and re-homing dogs and puppies in Halifax County.
OVERNIGHT
Steve will be resting in South Boston, after ending this leg of his run on the Route 360 bridge spanning the Dan River. Tomorrow, Steve will take off at 9:00am. Join us tomorrow morning for the next leg of the race!
